House-Buying as Spiritual Experience
It is time for you to buy a house. You have paid someone else’s mortgage through rent for far too long and it is time to pay your own mortgage.
So you begin to pray. Pray for everything you want, afterall God wants to hear our prayers about everything. Pray for the right Realtor, pray for the right financing, pray for the right house and then pray for your future in your house.
Only God knows what your future will be in your house but pray anyway. Pray for it to be a home where you will experience all of the joys and sorrows of a life. It should be a place where you and your family can dream. It is a place where you and your family become exactly who you were meant to be from the beginning of time. It is a place where you can find your spiritual self, places for quiet and meditation, places for execise and health. It should nurture your soul as well as your body.
A home is about relationships, family and friends in celebration of the events of life. Does your home expand for the people you will need and want to shelter there? A note: the demographics of families are in a constant state of change. Elsewhere in the world, people have their parents and relatives live with them under the same roof. Not only is it great for everyone but then the relatives are always included in the Celebrations of Life- births, deaths, birthdays, anniversaries from the most mundane to the most sublime. My parents invited my grandmother to live with them in their condo for the last four years of her life. My mother and grandmother lived a long way away from each other for 40 years. It was a time of renewing relationships for them, for the husband/son-in-law to experience much joy with his two favorite women in the house. It was not always easy but it was worth it.
Where will you study whatever it is you must study? Is the space condusive to expanding your own mind and your own universe? Do you have a place to pray or practice your spirituality as you would like to? The Bible says something like: go to your closet and pray so that you may not parade your spiritual self before others. Does it have a nice escape-closet. Mine does and I love it.
Getting in touch with your deepest self, will your yard feed you spiritually? Does it lend itself to picnics and parties in the sun and shade? Is it a place to play with your kids or dogs? Does it have what you want and need most? I have to have a swing in my yard because there are times of the year when you just want to enjoy a swing! Think October nights and the leaves.
Consider the light of the house. There will be a time when the light will fall in rays and warm your heart and brighten your spirits when you need it most. Let the house calm and soothe you. Nothing like a book in a rocker with the sun shining in on a bitterly cold winter day. Let the house comfort you in ways that only a house can.
Your home will be a part of your life for however long you choose to live there. Be careful and prayerful about the home that you select. It can be a place of rest and respite from the world or a thousand other things, the choice is yours.
